THE PAYAS
Their Energy Lives On
Paya Bay was once their home and their energy can still be felt in the woods and radiating from the rocks. Peaceful hunter-gatherers, the Payas lived in harmony with the land and the sea. Like many indigenous people, they hunted and fished only what was needed for the well being of the tribe. They held earnest reverence for the Great Mother who — they understood — always provided for her creation.
Being of peaceful and generous hearts, the Payas met the European explorers in cayucos filled with fruit, coconuts, and edible roots. They welcomed the strange visitors into their midst and showed them sources for fresh drinking water and other supplies. This same spirit of welcome and generosity can still be felt at Paya Bay.
