The largest of the Bay Islands of Honduras, Roatan is located approximately 40 miles off the northern coast of Honduras in the Western Caribbean. The island is 30 miles long and, on average, about 5 miles wide. The island is rugged and has several peaks that rise to nearly 1000 feet. As a result of abundant rainfall in the rainy season, the island is very green and lush. A portion of the Great Mesoamerican Barrier Reef — which starts in the Mexican Yucatan and ends off Nicaragua — can be found right offshore. This is the second longest reef system in world after the Australian Barrier Reef.
